Medication Use
Flonase is a drug used to combat symptoms such as congestion in the nose, itchy and runny nose and excessive sneezing. This nasal spray is used as a topical agent that is in the form of a metered, atomizing spray pump that is inserted into each side of the nose and sprayed 2 times.
How To Take Flonase Nasal Spray
For maximum results, Flonase should be used on a continuous basis. Flonase helps to relieve the inflammation of the sinus tract. After starting this treatment, it should be used once a day as directed by your doctor. The recommended starting dose is 2 sprays in each side of the nose once daily. This same dosage may be divided and used twice a day. This would be 100 mcg taken 12 hours apart. Both methods are as effective. If, after taking the drug for a few days, you may be able to reduce your dosage to 1 spray in each nostril for maintenance. For patients over the age of 12 that have seasonal allergic rhinitis may have to use the maximum dosage of 200 mcg once a day to control the symptoms. Regular use will control the symptoms better.
Warnings and Precautions
If you have a bacterial, fungal, or viral infection of any kind, please let your physician know. This drug, once absorbed into your system may cause your body’s ability to fight off infections ineffective. You may not be able to use this drug if you have any of these infections. For women that are pregnant, the FDA does not know if Flonase Nasal Spray will harm the unborn baby. Therefore, it is listed as category C by the FDA. It is also not known if it passes through breast milk. Please speak to your doctor about these concerns. This nasal spray is not approved for anyone younger than the age of 4.
Side Effects
There are usually no serious side effects from using Flonase Nasal Spray. You should discontinue use and seek emergency medical attention if you do experience any allergic reactions like difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, face, or hives. These are the most serious side effects. More common side effects can occur in the nose such as a stinging or burning feeling, excessive sneezing, nose bleeds, yeast infections in the nose and throat and seen as white patches. A perforated septum, glaucoma, tearing of the eyes, increased pressure in your eyes, headaches, lightheadedness, cough, asthma symptoms, nausea, stuffiness in the nose or even a runny nose, loss of taste or smell or even an unpleasant taste in the mouth. There may be more symptoms that are not listed here. If you are having any problems with Flonase, please contact your physician if they bother you too much.
Storage Of Medication
You should store Flonase Nasal Spray between 4 degrees and 30 degrees C or 39 degrees and 86 degrees F. Always keep out of the reach of children. Do not use your medication if it is past the expiration date.
