What is Zyrtec?
Zyrtec is a well-known and highly-used antihistamine. These prevent a runny nose, watery and itchy eyes and sneezing, along with other symptoms of allergies. It is used effectively to treat hives, allergic inflammatory conditions as well as basic allergies.
Drug Uses
Zyrtec is in a tablet form and mostly is taken only once a day. Some patients may need to take it regularly or only when their allergic symptoms flare up. Always follow the doctor's prescription directions carefully and never take more or less than prescribed. Ask your pharmacist or doctor if your have any questions about the dosage. Always take Zyrtec and any other medications exactly as directed.
Precautions
You may need a lower dose of Zyrtec if you have liver or kidney disease. You may also need special monitoring while using Zyrtec. Be sure to inform your physician if you have these conditions. Always tell your doctor if your a pregnant before using Zyrtec. Even though it is unlikely to have any ill effect on an unborn baby, it may still pass into the breast milk and affect the baby in this manner. Also, if you are 60 years of age or older you may need to take a lower dose of Zyrtec because of a higher risk of ill side effects.
Missed Dose
Never double up on a dose of Zyrtec if you forget to take your regularly scheduled dose. Take your dose at your next scheduled time.
Side Effects
Zyrtec may cause allergic reactions in some people. Some of these reactions include swelling of the tongue, lips or face, hives, difficulty in breathing or closing of the throat. These reactions should prompt seeking immediate medical attention. There are lesser side effects such as fatigue, dizziness, headache, dry mouth or sleepiness. You can still take the Zyrtec as directed, but inform the doctor as soon as possible. Other side effects may occur that are not listed here. You should always inform your physician of any side effects that you may experience.
Storage
Zyrtec should be stored in 20-25 degrees Celsius. When traveling it is acceptable to store it between 15-30 degrees Celsius.
Overdose
Any overdose of Zyrtec can be serious. Even though the symptoms are not common, some of them may include confusion, weakness or exteme drowsiness. Medical attention should be sought immediately for any suspicion of overdose.
Additional Information
Since Zyrtec may cause dizziness or drowsiness, caution should be taken when operating machinery, driving or doing any other hazardous tasks. Alcohol will intensify these reactions and should be avoided entirely. It may also be necessary to avoid performing the hazardous activities.
