Celexa (Citalopram) is an antidepressant grouped into a class of drugs known as SSRIs or serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Celexa restores the balance of certain chemicals in the brain to correct some mood problems such as depression.
How to Take Celexa
Celexa is taken orally once daily. The medication may be taken with or without food. The amount of Celexa a patient takes will vary. It is important to clarify any issues regarding dosage with your doctor or pharmacist. Celexa should be taken as directed. Patients should not increase or decrease the dosage without consulting their physician. Patients should continue to take Celexa even if they feel well.
Missed Dose
Patients who miss a dose of Celexa have two recommended options. Either take the dose as soon as they remember or wait until the next scheduled dosage time. A patient should never double a dosage.
Prior/existing Conditions
Patients with certain conditions may need to have their dosage adjusted or need special testing to safely take Celexa. Prior to taking Celexa, a patient should inform their doctor if they have any of the following conditions:
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease

- Epilepsy
- Bipolar disorder
- Manic depression
- History of drug abuse
- History of suicidal thoughts**

* A patient should inform their doctor if they become pregnant while taking Celexa. Patients who are breast-feeding should also inform their doctor prior to taking this medication.
** Patients who have had thoughts of suicide when taking other antidepressants should check with their doctor before starting the medication. This is especially true for patients younger than 24 years of age. A patient with such history needs to check with their doctor on a regular basis for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment with this medication.
