How Effexor XR works
Effexor XR works to treat depression by restricting the reabsorption of both norepinephrine and serotonin by nerve cells. Since these are the two main neurotransmitters that are implicated in the cause of depression for many people, Effexor XR works by controlling them.
How Effexor XR is Taken
Effexor XR is in capsule form and should be taken by mouth once each day, preferably with a meal. The capsule should be swallowed in its entirety and it should not be separated, chewed, mashed or submerged in water. If the capsule cannot be swallowed, the contents of the capsule can be added to a spoonful of applesauce. If Effexor is ingested in this manner, it should be instantly swallowed and taken with a glass of water to make sure the entire contents of the capsule have been swallowed.
Warnings
Before you begin taking Effexor XR, it is important to inform your physician about all of the current medicines you are using, such as over-the-counter medications and any vitamins. It is not recommended for you to take Effexor XR if you are currently taking MAOI's. If you are already taking an antidepressant before beginning Effexor XR, your doctor will monitor your behavior in case your depression worsens or your symptoms become more severe, including thoughts of suicide. This is especially important when you are taking Effexor XR for the first time, or if your dosage suddenly changes. If you suddenly feel confused, moody, belligerent, impetuous, or anxious while taking Effexor XR, you should contact your doctor immediately. Since Effexor XR has the potential to significantly raise blood pressure, your blood pressure should be checked frequently to ensure it does not get too high. It is possible for you to display withdrawal symptoms after your dose is dramatically lowered or if you stop taking the medication entirely. For this reason, you should only discontinue the use of Effexor XR if your doctor instructs you to. Women who are currently nursing or pregnant need to discuss with their doctor if it is safe for them to take an antidepressant. Alcohol should not be consumed in conjunction with Effexor XR.
If a Dose is Missed
The missed dose should only be taken if it does not coincide with your next regularly scheduled dose. It is not recommended to take a double dose of Effexor XR, as this can result in complications.
Side Effects
Like most other prescription drugs, this medication poses the risk of serious side effects. If you experience seizures, an abnormal heartbeat, blood pressure that is higher than normal, headache, vision problems, problems breathing, hives, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue, immediately stop taking Effexor XR and seek emergency medical care. Side effects such as stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, difficulty sleeping, dry mouth, sleepiness, dizziness, unusual dreams, sexual dysfunction, sweating and high cholesterol may occur, however, these side effects are not considered to be serious. If any of these side effects occur, inform your physician and continue to take Effexor XR. It is possible for other side effects to occur. If side effects become a problem or if new side effects occur, discuss these with your doctor.
Storage Information
Effexor XR should be stored in a safe place that is not accessible by children. The proper temperature for the storage of this medication is between 20-25 degrees Celsius, or 68-77 degrees Fahrenheit.
Signs of Overdose
Signs of an overdose of Effexor include seizures, abnormal heartbeat, numbness, dizziness and coma. If any of these symptoms occur, you should seek emergency medical care immediately.
Additional Information
Since Effexor XR has the potential to cause sleepiness and dizziness, use discretion when driving, operating machinery or performing any other potentially dangerous task. Alcohol consumption can worsen side effects and should be avoided while taking Effexor XR. Effexor XR should only be discontinued under the direction of a doctor, who will slowly decrease the dosage over time. Doing so will reduce the risk of withdrawal symptoms.
