Uses of Elavil
Elavil is a drug that is used to combat symptoms of depression. Certain types of depression, such as Endogeneous, will receive greater relief when Elavil is used.
How to Take Elavil
Elavil is a pill that is taken orally. The normal dosage is one to four pills daily and the pills can be taken on an empty stomach or after eating. Take Elavil as prescribed. Take only the amount that is prescribed by your physician. If your symptoms lessen, do not stop taking this drug. You should speak with your physician prior to ending an Elavil regime. When your physician and you decide that it is time to stop taking Elavil, your physician will probably want a gradual reduction in dosage. It takes a few weeks for Elavil to build up in your system. Do not expect to see immediate results from using this drug.
Warnings and Precautions Associated with Elavil
Certain conditions that you should report to your physician prior to taking Elavil include asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid disease. You should also tell your physician if you have intestinal or stomach problems, heart related problems such as a recent heart attack, high blood pressure or heart disease. Elavil could be harmful to a fetus. If you are pregnant are considering becoming pregnant, you should let your physician know. Elavil can be transferred to a baby through breast-feeding. People over 50 may notice dizziness, drowsiness, a general lack of coordination and a lowering of blood pressure. If you have any of these symptoms, your physician may prescribe a lower dosage.
Missing a Dose of Elavil
You should never take a double dose of Elavil. If you miss your scheduled dose, take it when you remember. When you forget to take a pill and it is close to the time for your next dose, simply skip the missed one and take the next as scheduled.
Potential Side Effects of Elavil
Side effects of Elavil should not be anticipated. Should you have a side effect you should let your physician know as soon as quickly as possible. Your physician is the only one who can determine if continuing this drug is safe for you. Side effects that are more intense in older people include potentially falling, sedation, dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, confusion, blurred vision and constipation. Side effects for the general population may include delusions, fatigue, a change in blood sugar, disturbed concentration, black tongue, enlarged breasts in males and females, blurred vision, anxiety, high fever, inflammation of the mouth, ringing in the ears, restlessness, nightmares, intestinal obstruction, coma, excitement, dizziness when getting up, impotence, increase or unexpected flow of breast milk, irregular heartbeat, rapid or fluttery heartbeat, high blood pressure, a feeling of dizziness or light-headedness, disorientation, abnormal movements, confusion, diarrhea, constipation, drowsiness, loss of coordination, low blood pressure, stroke, yellowing of the eyes or skin, difficulty in speech, dry mouth, hives, inability to sleep, a change in sex drive, loss of appetite, nausea, numbness, rash, dilation of the pupils, hallucinations, sensitivity to light, strange taste, swelling caused by retention of fluid in the face or tongue, stomach upset, swollen testicles or glands, tingling or pins and needles in the arms and legs, frequent or difficult urination, headache, tremors, seizures, purple or red spots on the skin, an increase of pressure within the eye, weight loss or gain, vomiting, increased perspiration, weakness, hepatitis, and heart attack. Side effects caused by an abrupt cessation of Elavil include nausea, headache, vague bodily discomfort. Side effects caused by a reduction in the dosage of elavil include disturbance of sleep or dream, restlessness, and irritability.
Storing Elavil
You should store Elavil in a container that closes tightly. You should not store in temperatures that exceed 30°C (86°F). You should not expose Elavil to light. All containers should be resistant to light penetration.
Overdose of Elavil
Sever signs of an overdose include CNS depression that includes coma, severe hypotension, convulsions, and cardiac dysrhythmias. Clinical indicators of tricyclic antipressant toxicity include changes in electrocardiogram, most specifically in QRS axis or width. Additional indications of an overdose include confusion, agitation, stupor, impared myocardial contractility, disturbed concentration, dilated pupils, hyperpyrexia, vomiting, drowsiness, visual hallucinations, ocular motility disorders, hyperactive reflexes, rigid muscles and hypothermia. An overdose of Elavil can cause death.
More Information about Elavil
Elavil can cause dizziness and drowsiness and you should use caution when operating a motor vehicle or performing any hazardous tasks. Dizziness is most likely to happen when you rise from a seated or lying position. A gradual change of position can reduce the severity of the dizziness. You should not discontinue Elavil abruptly as it could lead to nausea, malaise and vomiting.
