The Use of Paxil
The drug Paxil is used in the treatment of mood disorders including anxiety and depression. It is a medication that is a part of a family of antidepressants that operate on the chemicals in the brain in a similar fashion. Because of this similarity, the drug class is inclusively referred to as SSRIs, which is short for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
Serotonin, in this case, is the chemical that is being targeted because under the current medical thought, depression and mood disorders are believed to be caused by an imbalance of serotonin. By inhibiting the absorption of serotonin, it is believed that the increased amounts of this chemical in the cerebral fluids will result in an improvement in the patient diagnosed with a mood disorder.
Taking Paxil
Paxil is taken in tablet form, orally, and normally once every day. Many people prefer to take it with a meal, but it can also be taken without food. It is important to maintain the dose of Paxil prescribed by the doctor and to avoid intentionally or unintentionally increasing or decreasing the dose.
For people who have been taking Paxil for a long period of time, it is especially important to notify the doctor if you intend to reduce the dose or want to be taken off of this medication. It is normally a supervised process of decreasing the dose or changing the medication and should always be done under the care of a physician.
Potential Problems With Paxil
Like most medications, Paxil comes with a series of warnings for people who have experienced certain conditions in the past or are experiencing them in the present. Some of these conditions are:
- Liver Problems
- Kidney diseases
- Seizures and/or epilepsy
- Other Mood Disorders
- Suicidal Proclivities
- Mania
This list is not inclusive; it is intended to give patients an idea of the kind of conditions that may be complicated by the use of Paxil. It is intended to provide an insight into the kinds of conditions that you should discuss with your doctor if you are considering the use of Paxil or any other SSRI.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding presents a potential complication to the use of Paxil and SSRIs in general. As a general rule of thumb, women who are likely to become pregnant or who are pregnant or breast feeding will not be able to obtain reliable information on the effects of antidepressants and SSRIs on their infant or unborn babies.
This is because the classification system of drugs whose effects on the young are unknown or under-researched is categorically labeled as "class C drugs." Since Paxil is a category C drug, it is not possible to get definitive answers about the potential effects on the young from your doctor. However, you should discuss this matter with them as fully as possible in order to make an informed decision.
Missed a Dose?
If you have missed a dose of Paxil and it is not very long since the time you were supposed to have taken it, just take the dose as soon as you realize that it was missed. However, if a long time has passed and you are approaching the next scheduled dose, just skip the previous dose and take the next scheduled dose.
Side Effects, Serious and Common
Although Paxil may cause side effects, it is important to notice whether they are severe or mild. Common and less severe side effects may include muscle tremors, nervous feelings, headache, weight loss or gain, nausea and dry mouth, sleeping problems, reduced sexuality and digestive system issues such as diarrhea. There are other potential side effects as well, all of which should be discussed with your doctor.
The more serious side effects that could require you to stop taking Paxil and seek immediate emergency medical attention include, but are not limited to:
- Restricted Breathing
- Swelling in the Face or Mouth
- Changes in Heartbeat and Pulse
- High or Low Blood Pressure
- Becoming Unusually Dizzy or Weak
- Abnormal Bruising, Bleeding
- Chills and Fever
Storing Paxil Be sure to store Paxil at regular room temperature.
