Using Prozac

Prozac is a strong drug that has been used to treat many different conditions although it is commonly associated with treating depression. It has also been used to treat many different and diverse conditions such as OCD, or obsessive compulsive disorder, eating disorders and menstrual problems. It is considered a psychotropic drug and has come under scrutiny when prescribed for mild conditions or for use in the very young populations.

Depending on the condition being treated, it may take over a month to be fully experienced. It is typical for people who are given Prozac for OCD to experience a longer wait time than people who are taking it for depression.

How Prozac is Taken

Prozac may be prescribed with instructions to take it either once a day or twice per day. It is more effective when taken according to a strict schedule. Many people combine the taking of Prozac with another regular activity such as brushing the teeth. This provides the context of a routine around taking the daily dose of Prozac and can be a valuable aid in ensuring that no doses are missed.

Concerns of Taking Prozac

Certain conditions could be complicated if they are combined with taking Prozac. Some of these conditions include people who have had a recent heart attack, people who have a history of liver problems or who have diabetes.
Prozac is a powerful drug that can cause the impairment of certain motor coordination skills. It has been known to cause errors in judgment and could pose a threat to safety if combined with the operation of heavy equipment. Because it can slow down the reaction time, people should consider restricting their use of driving motor vehicles or operating any machinery that requires full and undivided attention in order to operate safely.

Common Side Effects of Prozac

Although it is normal to experience side effects, they can be somewhat alarming, depending on what you are used to; discuss all side effects with your doctor to see if they can be mitigated or if this is the right drug for you.

For example, some people who experience the common symptoms of dizziness or light headedness while standing up suddenly may become concerned, especially if there is no relief gained by standing up slowly. If this is the case, be certain to mention it to your doctor. Do not forget to mention how these side effects are impacting your normal routine.

Although all side effects should be discussed thoroughly with your primary health care provider, there are certain side effects that are more serious. Weight loss and sudden weight gain may be cause for concern. The appearance of hives or rashes may indicate that a change might need to be made, either in the dose or in the medication itself. Be sure to keep track of the severity and frequency of the appearance of all side effects and make sure that your doctor understands how often and how severe the side effects have become.

Pregnancy, or the possibility of becoming pregnant, poses unique concerns. The impacts of medications such as Prozac on the unborn or newly born breast-feeding infants have not been studied to any serious degree. Therefore, mothers or potential mothers are not able to access information about the effects that taking Prozac could have on their children. At the very least, mothers are advised against breastfeeding their babies while on Prozac because this medication will be passed to the infant in the milk.

Missing a Dose of Prozac

If you have missed taking your Prozac, and you realize that this has happened during the same day, make sure to take the dose immediately. However, if you miss the entire day, do not make up the dose and wait until the next scheduled dose.

Other Information

Taking Prozac in combination with other medications can cause serious problems. Be sure to speak comprehensively with your doctor about any other medications you have taken recently, even if you have stopped taking them. For example, MAO inhibitors can interact with Prozac for up to five weeks in the event of an overlap.
