Remeron Medication and Uses

Medication Usage
Mirtazapine is the generic equivalent to Remeron, an anti-depressant used for the management of major depressive disorder. It helps to control feelings of guilt, sadness, no interest in daily activities, tiredness, insomnia and suicidal thought processes.
Instructions for Taking Remeron
The usual dosage that the doctor starts a patient on is one 15 mg tablet taken in the evening at bedtime. This medication does produce a markedly sleepiness quite quickly after taking the dose.
Warnings and Precautions
If you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, do not take this medication. Do not take pain medications that increase serotonin in the brain as does the anti-depressant. Inform your physician if you have liver or kidney disease, blood disorders, manic-depressive mental issues, blood pressure problems or if you have had a heart attack recently. If seizures or epilepsy affect you, please advise the doctor of this. Because of possible complications, you may not be able to take Mirtazapine, or the doctor may change the dosage amount and monitor you more closely while taking this drug. The FDA has Remeron listed in the pregnancy category C. The FDA uses this listing if it is not known whether this drug is a danger to the fetus. If you are pregnant, please notify your physician. The FDA does not know if this medication is passed through breast milk. Please notify your doctor if you are breast feeding. Older patients are more likely to experience side effects such as drowsiness, unsteadiness, dizziness, low blood pressure or feeling uncoordinated. Again, your doctor may lower your dosage.
Missed Dose
If you have forgotten to take you medication, it is advised to wait until the next evening to take the next dose due to the side effect of sleepiness. Never take a double dose trying to make up for the one you missed, unless directed by your physician.
Side Effects
The following are serious side effects; an allergic reaction causing swelling of the throat, tongue, lips, face, trouble breathing, seizures, irregular heartbeat that may be fast, fever, sore throat, chills, sores in your nose or mouth and flu-like symptoms. Stop taking the medication and call your doctor immediately or if very serious, call 911 for emergency medical intervention. Less serious side effects include drowsiness, nausea, increase or decrease in appetite or weight, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness and mild tremors. If you are having problems with any of these side effects, please call your doctor and let him know.
Storage Store your medication in the original container in a cool dry area around 68 -77 degrees. Never store medication in the medicine cabinet in a bathroom. Keep the medication away from light.
Overdose
Symptoms include impaired memory, tachycardia, disorientation, extreme drowsiness, coma and convulsions. Call 911 and seek emergency help at once.
More Information
Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities.Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. It will increase the side effects of drowsiness and dizziness. It may also contribute to an overdose.
