Drug Uses
A prescription antidepressant Wellbutrin SR acts directly on the brain and nerve cells. Wellbutrin has also been used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD), chronic fatigue syndrome, lower back pain, bipolar depression, cocaine addiction and nicotine addition. Since it does work to treat nicotine addiction, it also helps smokers quit the habit and works identical to Zyban in this manner. It is not related chemically to tetracyclic, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor, tricyclic or many other well-known antidepressant agents.
How Taken
Wellbutrin is well taken in tablet form and the dosage may be from one to three times daily. This is tolerated well with or without food. Wellbutrin SR should never to chewed, crushed or divided. It must be swallowed whole for the full effect. Never abruptly stop taking Wellbutrin without consulting with your physician. The dose should be gradually decreased. Wellbutrin needs to be taken on a regular basis for a few weeks before the full benefits are felt.
Precautions
Anytime you take a new medication you must tell your doctor. Before using Wellbutrin tell him if you have any past history of head injury, brain tumor, seizures, heart, liver or kidney disease, diabetes, alcoholism, allergies, eating disorders, or deciding to quit smoking. The physician needs to know this information in case Wellbutrin causes coordination problems or dizziness. Driving or operating machinery should be avoided until your body gets used to the affects of the Wellbutrin. Avoid or stop using alcohol due to the increase in the risk of seizures. Wellbutrin should never be stopped abruptly also due to the risk of having seizures. Anyone over 65 years of age may need a lower dose due to a higher sensitivity to the drug. Wellbutrin passes into breast milk and there is a potential risk to an infant. Tell your physician if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Missed Dose
Never double up on a missed dose. Just wait until the next dose is due and begin again with the normal regimen.
Possible Side Effects
Most people can tolerate Wellbutrin without any ill side effects. The more common effects that may occur include headache, nausea, vomiting, sweating, anxiety, constipation, fatigue or blurred vision. Anytime these effects do not disappear or get worse, the doctor should be notified. More serious side effects could include agitation, trouble sleeping, palpitations, unexpected weight loss or gain, tremor, fainting, mood changes, dizziness, difficulty with urination, low sex drive, drowsiness, seizures, muscle aches, fever, mental problems, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. These side effects should be immediately reported. There may also be allergic reactions which could include itching, swelling, severe dizziness or trouble breathing. The pharmacist or doctor should be notified.
Storage
Wellbutrin should be stored at a room temperature of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius and in a light-resistant, tight container.
Overdose
An overdose of Wellbutrin is a serious matter and emergency aid should be sought immediately. Overdose symptoms may include hallucinations, unconsciousness, weakness, fast heartbeat, seizures or heart attack.
More Information
While getting used to the effects of Wellbutrin, it is advised to rise slowly from a lying or sitting down position to avoid dizziness or falling. It's also best to avoid of limit the use of caffeine while taking Wellbutrin.
