Drug Usage
Zoloft, available by prescription, treats people with a history of depression, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Zoloft may also be prescribed to treat children and adolescents with OCD.
Drug Administration
Zoloft may be taken orally by mouth once daily. Food is not necessary butmay help reduce side effects. Always take prescription medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is never acceptable to increase dosage by taking more tablets than recommended in one dose. You should also never take Zoloft more often than prescribed. Even if you feel well, you should continue taking Zoloft, and should only stop taking the medication in consultation with your doctor. If you have been taking large doses over a long period of time, your doctor will work with you to reduce your intake on a graduated scale. Do not stop taking Zoloft if your symptoms are not immediately ameliorated, as this drug must be taken regularly over a period of several weeks before it will work to its full potential.
Warnings and Precautionary Statements
Tell your doctor about any medical conditions you may have or any medications you may be taking before using Zoloft. Certain conditions may prevent you from taking Zoloft or may required specialized monitoring during treatment. These health conditions include liver and/or kidney disease, seizures, a recurrence of mania and suicidal thoughts. Because the FDA has placed Zoloft in pregnancy category C, which means that research has not determined whether or not Zoloft is harmful to an unborn baby, be sure to consult your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant while using Zoloft. Because it is unknown whether Zoloft passes into breast milk, nursing mothers should only take Zoloft in consultation with a doctor.
Missed Dosage
If you miss a dose, and have been taking Zoloft once daily in the morning, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If that is the case, skip the missed dose and continue taking it once daily in the mornings. If you miss a dose while taking Zoloft once daily in the evening and do not remember until the next day, take your next dose as scheduled in the evening. Do not make up for a missed dose by doubling your dosage at one time.
Possible Side Effects
As with any drug, stop taking Zoloft and get immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following side effects, as they are serious and could be life threatening: an allergic reaction (closing of the nose and throat accompanied by difficult breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, or a break-out of hives); irregular pulse or heartbeat; low blood pressure signified by weakness and dizziness; high blood pressure signified by severe head ache and blurry vision; chills or fever. Other, less serious side effects do not require immediate attention and include headache, tremor, anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, rapid change of weight or appetite, drowsiness or insomnia, decreased sex drive, impotence or difficulty achieving orgasm. Continue taking Zoloft while experiencing these side effects and others which may not be listed. Talk to your doctor if you experience side effects that significantly reduce your quality of life or that seem unusual.
Storage
Store at room temperature (77°F or 25°C). When taking a trip, maintain a temperature range of 59-86°F or 15-30°C.
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate emergency medical attention. A Zoloft overdose may include symptoms of nausea, vomiting, tremor, seizures, agitation, extreme sleepiness, hyperactivity and dilated or enlarged pupils.
