Drug Uses
A member of the penicillin class of drugs, Amoxil is used to fight bacteria in the body. Doctors prescribe Amoxil to help treat many different types of infections, including skin infections, ear infections, bronchitis, UTIs, tonsillitis, pneumonia, some sexually-transmitted diseases and others.
How Taken
There are several different ways in which Amoxil may be taken. It comes in the form of capsules to swallow, tablets to chew, liquid to drink and drops for pediatric patients to take orally. The prescription is generally taken three times a day. Amoxil should be taken exactly as directed by the doctor. If liquid or pediatric drops are used, be sure to shake the bottle thoroughly before each use. Carefully measure pediatric drops using the dropper. Place pediatric drops directly on the child’s tongue, or add them to the child’s formula or other cold liquid. For chewable tablets, make sure the pill is completely chewed or crushed prior to swallowing. In the case of capsules, the pills must be taken with a full glass of water and must be taken whole. Never stop taking Amoxil until the prescription is gone, even if you start to feel better.
Warnings/Precautions
People who have previously had allergic reactions to penicillin or to a cephalosporin should not take Amoxil without a doctor’s permission and prescription. Tell your doctor if you have had any history of kidney, stomach or intestinal disease. Amoxil is included in FDA pregnancy category B, is not expected to be harmful to any unborn baby and is considered perfectly safe for an expectant mother to take during her pregnancy. However, always discuss taking Amoxil with your doctor prior to starting the medication if you are pregnant or could possibly become pregnant. Nursing mothers should talk to their doctors before starting Amoxil, as it has been known to pass into breast milk. Some side effects have been reported, including diarrhea, yeast infections and mild allergic reactions in infants, but no serious problems or harm have been reported.
Missed Dose
Amoxil should be taken every eight hours. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember and then continue with the remainder of the day’s doses. If you remember a missed dose and it is nearly time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with the rest of your doses as originally directed. Never take double doses of Amoxil, unless instructed to do so by your doctor.
Possible Side Effects
Some side effects are possible, such as bloody or serious diarrhea or cramping in the abdomen. If you experience these side effects, contact your doctor. Seek immediate emergency medical care if you have an allergic reaction, seizures or abnormal bleeding or bruising. Signs of an allergic reaction include fainting, rash, closing of your throat, inability to breathe freely and swelling of your face, tongue or lips. Other side effects have been reported that are less serious, including mild nausea and vomiting, milk diarrhea and abdominal pain, thrush or yeast infection of the tongue, vaginal yeast infection, black tongue or a sore mouth. Other side effects are possible. Call your doctor if you experience any other side effects while taking Amoxil.
Storage
As with all medications, keep Amoxil away from the reach of children. Store the medication in a place free of heat or direct light, and never store Amoxil in a damp place, such as the bathroom or near the sink in the kitchen. Amoxil breaks down when exposed to heat or moisture. Keep oral Amoxil in the refrigerator, but do not allow it to freeze. Do not keep expired medicine.
Overdose
Though it is safe, it is possible to overdose on Amoxil. Someone who has overdosed on Amoxil will experience symptoms including muscle weakness or spasms, pain or numbness in the toes and fingers, pain or twitching of the muscles, confusion, seizures, agitation or even coma. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
More Information
Immediately contact your doctor if you have severe or bloody diarrhea or abdominal cramps while you are taking this medication. Be sure to take the entire prescription of Amoxil even if you feel better after a few doses. Amoxil will make your symptoms improve before the infection is eradicated. Your birth control pills may be less effective while you are taking Amoxil, so use a back-up method of birth control while taking your prescription.
