Drug Uses
Tetracycline is an antibiotic used to treat many bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, skin infections, acne, urinary and genital infections and stomach ulcers.
How Taken
Tetracycline is available in doses from 1 g to 2 g. For severe infections, a doctor may prescribe a higher dose. Treatment should continue for one to two full days after symptoms are gone.
Warnings/Precautions
If you are sensitive to tetracycline medications, consult a doctor before beginning this medication. Do not take Tetracycline unless you have a bacterial infection, or are suspected to have a bacterial infection. Using Tetracycline to treat an infection not caused by bacteria can lead to drug-resistant bacteria.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, the effectiveness of the medicine will be decreased. If you do not finish the entire prescription, the effectiveness will also be decreased. If this happens, the bacteria could become drug-resistant, and will not be able to be treated by this or any other antibiotic.
Possible Side Effects
As with most medications, side effects are possible. Most side effects will be mild. Side effects can include nausea, vomiting, loose stools, anorexia, dysphagia, enterocolitis, hoarseness or inflammatory lesions.
Storage
Tetracycline should be stored in a secure container away from children. Avoid heat and moisture. Do not store medication in a bathroom or near the kitchen sink.
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose, call 911 or go to the emergency room.
More Information
If you are taking this medication for an extended period, your doctor will monitor your organs to ensure they are performing properly. Tests for the renal, hematopoietic and hepatic systems may be performed.
