Drug Uses
Alesse is a very effective form of birth control. Its effectiveness has been proven to be 99 per cent when taken as directed. Alesse contains only natural hormones that prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg, and prevent sperm from entering the uterus. When using Alesse, you can enjoy intimacy without worry.
Dosage
Take your first pill on the first Sunday after your period begins (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise). Take one pill once a day, no more than 24 hours apart. Try to take the pills at the same time each day. For example, take them with your dinner, which you probably do at relatively the same time in the evenings. Taking the pill at night will also help you reduce headaches and nausea associated with the hormones contained in Alesse. If you are on a 28 day cycle, take the pills until they run out. Start taking pills from a new package the following day. The 28 day cycle has either 7 placebos (containing no active elements) or supplements of iron. If you are on the 21 day cycle, take the pills for 21 days and when you finish taking all the pills in this package, do not take a pill for another 7 days. On the 8th day, begin a new 21 day package. You should have your during the 7 off days. You should follow your doctor's instructions on what alternate form of birth control to use when you first begin taking birth control pills and/or if you take antibiotics or if you miss a pill. Consult your doctor if you are unsure of what to do in any of these cases.
Precautions/Warnings
Before beginning this medication, tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, angina, had a stroke, any type of cancer, bleeding or blood clotting disorder, jaundice caused by using birth control in the past, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, migraines, seizures or epilepsy. If you have any of the above conditions, you may not be able to take birth control pills or you may require special monitoring while taking them. Birth control pills fall into the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that birth control pills cause birth defects in an unborn baby. If you are pregnant or think you are pregnant, do not take birth control pills. The hormones in birth control pills will affect breast milk and reduce the production of milk. If you are breast feeding, talk with your doctor about alternative birth control methods.
Missing a Pill
Missing a pill could result in pregnancy. This includes starting a pack later than you were scheduled to start. The more pills you miss, the greater the risk of becoming pregnant. The pills won't be as effective if you leave out pink (active) pills, and particularly if you leave out the first few or the last few in the pack. Missing pills can also cause spotting and/or light bleeding, even if you make up the missed pills. If you take 2 pills to make up for a missed pill, you may feel nauseous.
