Prevent Pregnancy With Ortho Tri-Cyclen

Drug Use

Ortho Tri-Cyclen is used by patients to prevent pregnancy. This estrogen and progestin combination may be prescribed to treat menopause symptoms or regulate the menstrual cycle.

Dosage

For best results, take one pill daily at the same time. Failure to maintain a consistent schedule may result in pregnancy. You are more likely to become pregnant the more pills you miss. Light bleeding or spotting may occur and nausea is possible during the first one to three packs of pills taken. Do not stop taking the pills if you feel nauseous, this will normally go away. In the event that it continues, check with your doctor. Skipping your pill can cause light bleeding or spotting. Making up the dosage may not stop the spotting and you may also feel nauseous when you make up the dose.

Warnings/Precautions

You increase your risk of heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, blood clots, or other diseases of the blood vessels and heart if you smoke while taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen. Your medicine will not work as well if you have vomiting or diarrhea. The effectiveness of Ortho Tri-Cyclen is diminished with some antibiotics or anticonvulsants. Additional birth control forms may be needed to prevent pregnancy until your next period. If you are planning on having any medical or dental treatment, advise your doctor or dentist that you are taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen. In the event of emergency care or surgery, advise your doctor that you are taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen. Check with your doctor if you begin a new prescription or take any over-the-counter medication. Dark patches on your face may occur with use of Ortho Tri-Cyclen. Ortho Tri-Cyclen is not a protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Ortho Tri-Cyclen should not be used if you are pregnant. If you feel that you have become pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. Ortho Tri-Cyclen can be excreted in breast milk and may cause risks to your baby by breast-feeding.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take two pills at your next scheduled dose. Should you miss two days, add the two pills to your next scheduled dose. Use a backup birth control method for seven consecutive days after the missed dose. If you miss two pills, your chances of becoming pregnant increase. Missing three pills in a row requires you to start a new package on the seventh day after you last took a pill. Continue to use a secondary method of birth control until you have taken seven consecutive doses. During the seven days without the pill your period should occur. If it does not, take a pregnancy test before starting a new package of pills.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, weight change, or bleeding between periods. These effects may go away during treatment, but if they continue contact your health professional. If you have any abnormal vaginal bleeding, missed period, swelling of fingers or ankles, dizziness or fainting, headaches, or you are unable to wear your contact lenses, call your doctor promptly. Chest pains, shortness of breath, signs of jaundice, changes in vision, numbness of your arms or legs, severe headache or leg pain, or stomach pain that is severe needs to reported to your doctor immediately.

Storage

Keep your medication at room temperature away from light, moisture, and children.

Overdose

Overdoses may cause nausea and females may have withdrawal bleeding. There are no reports of serious effects in young children that have ingested large doses of oral contraceptives.

More Information
