Drug Uses
Estrogen and progestin are combined in this birth control pill to prevent pregnancy. In addition to preventing pregnancy, it is also used successfully to help regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle, treat menopause symptoms and treat other conditions as recommended by your regular physician.
How to Take
The pill should be taken daily, at the same time every day. It is important that the pill be taken at about the same time every day. Any missed pill should be taken as soon as possible. The chance of pregnancy increases with every pill that is missed. It is normal to feel sick to the stomach or to experience spotting or light bleeding during the first 1 to 3 months of taking the pills. Do not stop taking the pill due to these side effects, they will abate with time. It is normal to feel sick to the stomach on days that 2 pills are taken to make up for a missed dose. Certain medications, especially antibiotics, can reduce the effectiveness of the pills. Vomiting and diarrhea can also make the pill less effective. During these times of illness a form of back-up protection should be used to prevent pregnancy. It is important to remember to take the pill every day. If you find that this is challenging for you, talk to your physician about methods and tools that can be used to help you remember. If you continue to forget the daily dose it is recommended that you switch to a different form of birth control until your next period. Breakthrough bleeding is normal if you forget to take the pill. If you have any questions regarding the pill and how it should be taken, contact your regular physician to have them answered.
Warnings and Precautions
Smoking cigarettes while taking Ortho-Tricyclen should be avoided. Doing son can increase the risk that you will have a heart attack or stroke, develop life-threatening blood clots, experience high blood pressure or develop some other disease of the heart and blood vessels. If you experience diarrhea or vomiting the effectiveness of Ortho-Tricyclen may be compromised. Additional birth control methods should be used until you have your next period. Questions should be discussed with your regular physician, nurse or pharmacist. Before beginning any new medical treatment or dental work, emergency care or any surgery tell the attending physician or dentist that you are taking Ortho-Tricyclen. If you normally wear contact lenses and start having difficulties with them you should consult your doctor or pharmacist. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist before beginning any new over-the-counter medication or prescription medication as some can reduce the effectiveness of the pill. Dark patches may form on your face as a result of taking Ortho-Tricyclen and exposure to the sun may cause these patches to become darker. Use of a sunscreen can help and precautions should be taken such as wearing sunscreen or protective clothing and avoiding tanning booths or sunlamps. Sexually transmitted diseases will not be prevented with the use of Ortho-Tricyclen. Ortho-Tricyclen should not be taken if you are pregnant or suspect you are pregnant. Ortho-Tricyclen is passed through breast milk. Consult with your doctor about the possible risks to the baby if you will be taking Ortho-Tricyclen while breast feeding.
Missed Dose
It is important that you do not miss a dose. Should a dose be missed it should be taken as soon as possible, or two pills can be taken the next day with the regular dose. Missing just one pill will increase the risk of pregnancy and secondary birth control methods such as condoms or spermicidal gels should be used for seven consecutive days after the missed dose, or until your next menstrual cycle. If you miss two doses in a row, you can take all three tables at the same time or you may spread the missed doses out over two days, taking two pills two days in a row. The chances of ovulating will be higher so you must use secondary birth control for a minimum of seven consecutive days after the missed doses or until your next menstrual cycle. If you miss three tables in a row the package should be disposed of. Wait until the seventh day after you first missed a pill then start a new package. Another form of birth control should be used for the next seven days. Your period should begin during the week that you are not taking Ortho-Tricyclen. If it does not, a pregnancy test should be taken before starting the new package.
Side Effects
As with any medication, there is the potential for side effects with Ortho-Tricyclen. The following may occur: nausea, bleeding between menstrual periods, weight change, vomiting and breast tenderness. If these side effects are upsetting, talk with your regular doctor. Some side effects are more serious and should be discussed with your regular doctor. These include recurrent vaginal bleeding that is abnormal, missed menstrual cycles, fainting or dizziness, headache, difficulty wearing contact lenses and swelling of fingers or ankles. Severe side effects such as sudden chest pain that is sharp, shortness of breath, severe headache or leg pain, changes in vision, numbness in arm or leg, severe stomach pain or a yellowing of the skin or eyes should be discussed with your doctor immediately.
StorageOrtho-Tricyclen should be stored at room temperature away from moisture and away from light. It should be kept out of the reach of children at all times.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms typically include nausea and some withdrawal bleeding in sexually active women. Children who have consumed large doses of oral contraceptives did not report any serious problems.
More Information
Before prescribing Ortho-Tricyclen to you your doctor will take a detailed medical history and family history as well as conducting an examination. This examination can be delayed if requested and if your doctor agrees to a delay. Women taking Ortho-Tricyclen should be examined once a year.
