Aldactone Uses
Aldactone is a diuretic, also known as a water pill. The primary purpose is to rid the body of extra fluid without losing the all important potassium in your body. Treatments can include the treatment of edema and high blood pressure. A hormonal disorder called hyperaldosteronism is also treated by Aldactone. Potassium shortage is treated by Aldactone too.
How Taken
Aldactone is taken by tablets and usually taken once per day with the morning breakfast. It may also be taken twice a day with breakfast and lunch. Do not take later than lunch; otherwise you may be up and down during the night emptying the bladder. You should always follow the directions labeled on the bottle. If you do not understand something about Aldactone, please ask your pharmacist for a further explanation as to the directions. Take the medication exactly as prescribed. Taking more or less than prescribed could cause some serious side effects. This drug controls high blood pressure and therefore all instructions should be carefully followed. If you have concerns about this medication, please contact your doctor with your concerns. Even if you are feeling well, never stop taking this medication without the doctor’s prior approval.
Warnings and Precautions
Always let your physician know if you have kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, liver disease, excessive amounts of potassium in your blood, taking potassium supplements or any ACE inhibitor. The doctor may choose to use a different diuretic or if they do choose to put you on Aldactone, they may change the dosage and monitor you very closely for the listed conditions.Aldactone is listed in the FDA pregnancy category D. Do not take this drug if you are pregnant. It is known to harm the fetus in the womb. It is not clear whether Aldactone is passed through breast milk. Talk to your doctor about taking Aldactone if you are intending to breast feed.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take your medication, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next prescribed dose, pass the missed dose and resume your regular schedule of taking your Aldactone. Never try doubling your dose trying to make up for the missed dose.
Possible Side Effects
If you have trouble breathing, swelling of the throat, tongue, face, or lips, seek emergency care at once. If you develop hives, have an irregular heartbeat, any type of shortness of breath, confusion, fatigue, a weakness or numbness and tingling, also seek emergency care immediately. This could be a cause of high levels of potassium in the bloodstream.
Less Serious Side Effects
Headaches of an unusual type, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, decrease in appetite, muscle cramping, bloating, excessive hair growth, enlarged breasts, or even a lower tone in your voice should be brought to your doctor’s attention if these side effects become too bothersome to you.
Storage
Aldactone should be kept at room temperature and away from children. Keep the medicine away from moisture or excessive heat, such as in a restroom. Always keep the medication in its’ original container. Do not take this medication if it has expired. You should properly dispose of any unused pills. Oftentimes, your local pharmacist will be able to tell you how to properly dispose of any unused drugs.
Overdose An overdose of Aldactone causes drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and mental confusion.

Additional Information Aldactone is many times used in conjunction with other drugs to treat various conditions like precocious puberty, myasthenia gravis, and also to treat some women with an abnormal amount of hair growth on the face.
