Esgic Plus is a pain killer that is commonly used to treat tension headaches. Esgic is a combination of a barbiturate, analgesic (acetaminophen) and a stimulant (caffeine). It is a relaxant that relieves tension headaches that are caused by the muscles in the neck and shoulders contracting, which often results in a migraine headache. This non-narcotic pain reliever works by the barbiturates slowing down the central nervous system which helps the body to relax, the acetaminophen relieving pain and reducing fever, and the caffeine constricting any dilated blood vessels that might be contributing to the tension headache.
How to Take Esgic Plus
Esgic Plus should only be taken when prescribed by a licensed physician. When prescribed, the adult dosage is one or two capsules every four hours as needed. If the Esgic strength contains 325 or 500 milligrams (mg) of acetaminophen per capsule, no more than six capsules should be taken in a 24-hour period. Never take more Esgic Plus than has been prescribed by the physician, or take the medication longer than the physician recommended.
Warnings and Precautions when Taking Esgic Plus
All medications should be taken with care, as they may contain substances that can lead to dependency on the medication. If Esgic Plus is becoming less effective than when first taking the medication, it could mean that the patient may be dependent on the Esgic Plus. Never attempt to reduce the pain by taking more than the prescribed dosage. If the headaches change in any way such as becoming more frequent, occurring within one day of last dose of medication, occurring every day, or continuously for several days in a row, it is very important to contact the physician.
Side Effects
There are potential side effects when taking Esgic Plus, as with all medications. While side effects may be rare, if they occur, or if more than one occurs at the same time, contact the physician to discuss the problem. Potential side effects include bleeding or crusting sores on the lips, large swelling of the eyelids, face, lips or tongue, red or scaly skin, hives, sores, itching or a rash on the skin, or muscle cramping. Other serious side effects include chest pain or tightening in the chest, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, fever with or without chills, and painful white spots on the mouth. Sore throat, confusion, mental depression, or unusual excitement can also occur when taking Esgic Plus. Always contact the physician when experiencing side effects before taking subsequent doses of the medication.
Missed Dosages
If the medication is being taken on a regular schedule, as ordered by the physician, and a dose is missed the Esgic Plus should be taken as soon possible. If it is nearly time for the next dose, do not take the missed dose. Never take two capsules of Esgic Plus at the same time, or take two capsules within two hours of each other.
Potential Overdose
If it is suspected that an overdose of Esgic Plus has been taken by the patient or anyone else, it is important to seek emergency medical attention right away. An overdose of Esgic Plus may lead to unconsciousness or possible death. Never take this medication when drinking or using alcohol or CNS depressants, as serious interactions may occur. Always contact the physician if an overdose is suspected.
Storage
Store Esgic Plus away from direct heat and direct light. Do not store the medication in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in any other damp place as heat and moisture may cause the medication to be less than effective. Store away from and out of the reach of children.
This medication can cause drowsiness and/or dizziness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery when taking Esgic Plus.
