Drug Uses

Imitrex Oral is used to treat migraine headaches. It can be used for migraines with or without an aura. An aura can be dark spots, wavy lines or flashing lights before or during a headache. Imitrex should not be used for cluster headaches or to prevent a migraine. 
Imitrex Oral works by targeting the blood vessels and nerves that researching think are responsible for migraines. This medication treats nausea, pain and sensitivity to sound and light. 

How Taken

Take one dose at the first signs of a migraine. A second dose may be needed, and should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Do not crush or chew the pills. Take a whole pill with a full glass of water. Maximum daily dose is 200 mg. 

Warnings/Precautions

Before taking Imitrex Oral, tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart disease, stroke, liver or kidney disease or drug allergies. Although rare, there have been reports of those with sulfa drug allergies having an allergic reaction to this medication. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have an allergy to a sulfa drug. 

Imitrex Oral can cause you to become drowsy. Do not drive or engage in dangerous activity until you know how you will react to this medication. Drinking alcohol while taking Imitrex can cause excessive drowsiness or dizziness. Imitrex should only be used during pregnancy when the benefits outweigh the risks. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication is excreted in breast milk, but the effects on newborns are not known. Talk to your doctor before taking this medication if you are nursing. 

Missed Dose

Imitrex Oral is not to be taken regularly. It should be taken only when a migraine has started. Never take a double dose of Imitrex Oral. 

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are possible with Imitrex Oral. Side effects should be mild and will disappear over time. They can include: dizziness, flushing, nausea, weakness, tiredness, tingling, fatigue, heat or stiffness. If these side effects are severe, consult your doctor. 
Allergic reactions are rare, but can include itching, swelling, rash, dizziness or trouble breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. If you experience any side effects not listed, call a pharmacist or physician. 

Storage

Imitrex should be kept away from extreme heat or cold. Store between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep away from light or heat sources. It should not be stored in a bathroom. Keep away from children. 

Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose can include chest pain, shallow breathing, seizure or tremor. If you experience any of these symptoms, go to the emergency room or call poison control.
