What is Nexium?
Nexium, also known by its generic name Esomeprazole, is a prescription drug used to help decrease the amount of acid in the stomach. It treats a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in which excess acid built up in the stomach causes heartburn and damage to the esophagus. Nexium can also help alleviate the symptoms associated with GERD while promoting healing to the esophagus. It can be taken in conjunction with other medications to prevent gastric ulcers due to infections. This particular drug falls in a classification group of pump inhibitors that works to limit stomach acid.
How to Take Nexium
Nexium is taken orally in delayed-release capsules and should be swallowed an hour before eating each day. It is best to take Nexium the same time every day to avoid missing dosages. It is not recommended that Nexium be crushed, chewed, or split prior to consumption. If the drug cannot be taken whole, it can be opened and mixed in one tablespoon of applesauce then swallowed immediately. The pellets should not be chewed or stored within the mixture.
Precautions
If you suffer from any type of liver disease, alert your physician before taking Nexium. This effects the dosage amount and whether or not Nexium should be prescribed. Furthermore, the physician should also be alerted if pregnancy occurs. Though Nexium doesn't pose as a threat to the heath of an unborn child being considered a category B drug, the doctor still may want to monitor your progress. You may also want to talk with your doctor if you plan on breast feeding your baby. Scientists have not yet discovered whether Nexium travels through the breast milk or the harm that may be caused from it. If you decide to breast feed, discuss your options with your doctor.
Side Effects
There have been reports of hypersensitivity reactions from patients on penicillin therapy. Patients with a history of penicillin sensitivity are more at risk for experiencing these reactions which can be serious and occasionally fatal. Nearly all antibacterial agents are either sever, mild, or life threatening including amoxicllin and clarithromycin. Allergen sensitivity is taken into consideration in all patients experiencing diarrhea following administration.
Possible Nexium side effects include diarrhea, headache, cough, and constipation. These side effects do subside during treatment but should be reported in the event they persist or become troublesome. Patients who experience chest, throat, or stomach pain or even coffee-ground vomit should consult a doctor immediately. Allergic reactions while unlikely, should also be reported to your physician and include symptom such as dizziness, swelling, itching, rash, and trouble breathing.
Missed Dose
It's not uncommon for patients to forget taking a dose now and then. When this happens, the missed dose can be taken when remembered but should be skipped when coming upon the next dose. Unless directed by a physician, patients should never double dose.
Storage Information
Nexium should be kept tightly closed and stored at 25oC (77oF) and emergency medical attention should be notified in the event of an overdose. An overdose can bring upon sever symptoms including seizures, tremors, shortness of breath, drowsiness, and lost of coordination.
