Drug Uses

Prevacid helps to decrease the amount of acid that is produced by the stomach. It can be used to prevent and treat intestinal and stomach ulcers, erosive esophagitis (damage caused to the esophagus by stomach acid) and other health conditions relating to the over-production of stomach acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Prevacid is also used for additional purposes not listed here.

How To Take Prevacid

Prevacid is available in long-lasting, extended capsules that are intended for oral use. This medication is typically taken one time each day, before eating. Prevacid should be taken exactly as instructed. This medication should not be taken in lesser or greater quantities than what has been doctor prescribed. It should not be taken more frequently than doctor prescribed. Capsules should be swallowed whole, however, patients who experience difficulty in swallowing capsules can open the capsule and sprinkle the granules onto applesauce and swallow this concoction immediately. These granules should never be crushed or chewed. Patients should continue to take Prevacid even when they begin to feel well. You should speak with your doctor before discontinuing your Prevacid therapy.

Precautions/Warnings

Tell your doctor if you have ever had liver disease before you begin taking Prevacid. Patients who have had liver disease may not be able to take this drug or may require an adjusted dosage or careful health monitoring during their Prevacid therapy. This drug is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that Prevacid is not anticipated to have a harmful effect on unborn babies. You should not take Prevacid while pregnant before consulting with your doctor. It is unknown if this drug is able to pass into the breast milk. Patients who are breastfeeding should not start Prevacid therapy without first speaking with their physicians.

Missed/Skipped doses

Missed doses should be taken as soon as they are remembered. If a missed dose is remembered at or near the time of the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped and the regular dosing schedule should be resumed. Never make up for a missed dose by taking a double dose of Prevacid.

Potential Side Effects

Severe side effects from Prevacid are uncommon. You should cease taking this medication and contact emergency medical services if you experience the symptoms of an allergic reaction. These will include throat closure, difficulty breathing, hive and swelling of the face, tongue or lips.Other, less severe side effects are more likely to occur. You can continue your Prevacid therapy and speak with your doctor if any of the following occur:- abdominal pain, nausea or diarrhea- headache- dizzinessSide effects in addition to those that are listed here can also occur. Speak with your doctor about any reactions or side effects that are exceedingly bothersome or which appear to be unusual.

How To Store Prevacid

Prevacid should be stored at room temperature and kept away from both heat and moisture.

Overdose

If an overdose is suspected, emergency medical services should be contacted immediately. The symptoms of a Prevacid overdose are currently unknown.
