Drug Uses
Propecia is a medication used to treat male pattern baldness on the top and middle front of the head. There is insufficient evidence that this medication will work for a receding hairline at the temples. Propecia is meant for men only, and should not be used by persons under the age of 18 or by women.
How Taken
Propecia is available as a tablet to be taken once per day. It should be taken exactly as prescribed. Do not take more or less of this medication than prescribed. Do not stop taking this medication without first discussing it with your doctor.
Warnings/Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease before you take Propecia. Patients with liver disease may not be able to take this medication, or may need to be closely watched during treatment. This medication should not be taken by women. Women who are pregnant or could become pregnant should not handle this medication for any reason. This medication is the FDA's pregnancy category X. It is known to cause birth defects in a developing baby. Pregnant women should not touch a broken or damaged tablet, as the medication could be absorbed through the skin. Pregnant women should avoid being exposed to a whole tablet, though the risk of harm to the baby is lower as long as the mother does not swallow a pill. It is not known if the medication is excreted in breast milk. Do not take this medication if you are nursing a baby.
Missed Dose
If you remember a missed dose the same day, take the missed tablet as soon as you can. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed pill and resume your usual schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time.
Possible Side Effects
Immediately discontinue use of Propecia and seek medical attention if you have any symptoms of an allergic reaction. These symptoms include swelling of the lips, face or tongue; hives; swelling or closing of the throat; or difficulty breathing.
Other side effects have also been reported, but lessen as time passes. Continue with your regular doses, but talk to your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects: decreased sex drive, impotence, decreased ejaculation volume, breast enlargement or breast tenderness. Other side effects may occur when taking Propecia. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about them.
Storage
Propecia should be stored between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep away from children and store in a securely closed container. Do not store near moisture, or keep in the bathroom.
Overdose
It is not known what the symptoms of an overdose are, but if you suspect an overdose, call 911 or go to the emergency room.
More Information
