What is Antivert?

Antivert, also known as Meclizine in generic form, is a drug that is used as an antihistamine. Antivert works by blocking a naturally occurring antihistamine in the body. Antivert is used to treat and prevent vomiting, nausea, and dizziness that is caused by motion sickness. It is much more effective if taken prior to the onset of symptoms.

How is Antivert used?

Antivert comes as a standard tablet, chewable tablet and a capsule. If Antivert is being used to treat motion sickness, it is recommended to be taken one hour prior to the start of travel. If Antivert is being used to treat dizziness caused by an inner ear condition, follow the directions given by your physician. Be sure to follow the directions on your prescription label very carefully, and ask your pharmacist or physician to further explain any part of the directions you do not understand. Take Antivert precisely as directed. The chewable tables can be swallowed whole or chewed.

What precautions should be followed?

Antivert may cause drowsiness. Do not operate any machinery, or drive a motor vehicle until you know how your body reacts to this medicine. Antivert will increase the effect of other depressants or alcohol. Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are known to be allergic to Antivert or any other drugs. Tell your doctor what, if any prescribed and non-prescribed medications that you currently take, as they may increase the drowsiness caused when taking Antivert. It is currently unknown if Antivert is excreted in breast milk. If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are currently breast-feeding while taking Antivert, please contact your doctor to discuss the risks to your child.

What happens if a dose is missed?

Since Antivert is most commonly taken on an as-needed basis, it is not normally an issue if a dose is missed. If you are on a regular schedule, take the missed dose as soon as you remember unless it is close to the time of your next dose. Do not double dose Antivert.

What are the possible side effects?

You should stop taking Antivert and seek emergency medical attention if you experience any kind of allergic reaction. Allergic reactions typically can cause difficulty breathing, swelling of face, tongue, lips, closing of the throat, and hives. Other side effects may occur, but are less serious. Continue taking Antivert as prescribed and talk to your doctor if you experience dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nervousness, insomnia, constipation, or blurred vision. Side effects not listed above may also occur. Talk to your doctor or physician about any side effect that is worrisome or unusual.

How to properly store Antivert

Antivert should be kept in the container it came in, tightly sealed and out of reach of children and animals. The container should be kept at room temperature and away from excess moisture and heat. Medication that is outdated or no longer needed should be properly disposed. Contact your pharmacist about proper disposal of medication.

What do you do when overdose is suspected?

Contact your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include, but are not limited to excitability, hallucinations, slow or shallow breathing, seizures, and drowsiness.

Additional Information

Antivert can increase the effects of other depressants, especially those that cause drowsiness. These drugs include antidepressants, antihistamines, alcohol, sedatives, pain relievers, muscle relaxants, and anxiety medication.
