Drug Uses
Tramadol, a pain medication used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain, is often prescribed for pain caused by chronic conditions like joint pain or cancer. Tramadol is also effectively used to treat pain following surgery. By decreasing the size of the pain signals that nerves pass to each other, Tramadol decreases the brain's ability to perceive pain and respond to it. Doctors occasionally prescribe Tramadol for other conditions, but a doctor or pharmacist can give you more information.
How Taken
Tramadol is a tablet that should be taken orally by mouth, every 4-6 hours or as needed. Tramadol may be ingested with or without food. It absolutely necessary that you carefully follow the directions for usage on the prescription label, and consult with a doctor or your pharmacist to clarify anything you do not understand. Always take your medication exactly as directed. You should never take more of Tramadol than recommended, either as a larger dose or for longer than suggested.
Warnings and Precautionary Statements
Certain health conditions may require monitoring during treatment or prevent you from taking Tramadol at its recommended dosage or at all. Tell your doctor if you suffer from kidney or liver disease, or if you have a history of drug or alcohol dependence. The FDA has categorized Tramadol in the pregnancy category C, meaning that it is not known whether Tramadol would affect or harm an unborn baby. It is also unknown whether the medication passes into the breast milk of nursing mothers. If you are pregnant, could become pregnant, or are breast feeding, consult your doctor before taking Tramadol. People who are older than 75 years of age could face an increased risk of side effects when taking Tramadol, and as a result people over 75 years old should not take more than 300 mg daily. Do not give to any child younger than 16 years of age, as the FDA has not approved Tramadol for use by children.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take the next dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next tablet, skip the dose and continue taking at the regular time as directed, as you should never take a double dose of Tramadol to make up for one you missed.
Possible Side Effects
Those taking Tramadol do not commonly suffer side effects, though side effects can occur. Side effects most frequently reported include events affecting the central nervous system, such as migraines or speech disorders, and the gastrointestinal system, such as bleeding, Stomatitis, liver failure, and Hepatitis. Consult your doctor if you experience the following symptoms as severe or persistent: dizziness, headache, drowsiness, blurred vision, upset stomach, vomiting, and diarrhea. Call your doctor immediately if Tramadol causes fast heartbeat; redness, swelling, or facial itching; tingling or numbness of the extremities; difficult breathing; seizures or changes in urination.
Storage
Store in a tight container container at room temperature (25°C or 77°F); on excursions maintain a temperature range of 15-30°C or 9-86°F.
Overdose
Immediately get emergency medical attention if you experience symptoms of a Tramadol overdose such as difficulty breathing, weak or shallow breathing and seizures.
More Information
When taking Tramadol, do not use alcohol, which may cause a decrease in breathing. Alcohol and Tramadol can also cause liver problems when used together. Be cautious when operating heavy machinery, a motor vehicle, or engaging in other hazardous activities because Tramadol may make you drowsy or dizzy. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience dizziness or drowsiness. Do not take sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers, or antihistamines with Tramadol unless directed by your doctor. These drugs may increase Tramadol's side effect of sleepiness.
