Drug Uses
The prescription medication Ultram has been prescribed for patients suffering from moderate to more severe pain. Ultram has also been prescribed for the treatment of discomfort cased from a surgery, or from cancer or joint pains. This drug works by blocking the brain's perception and responses to pain. It also lessens the intensity of the pain signal that gets passed between the nerves. Ultram can be prescribed for other uses, as well. Talk to your doctor about the use of Ultram for problems not discussed within this article.
How Ultram is Taken
Ultram is prescribed in tablet form, and is to be taken orally. The general directions are to take it every 4-6 hours, if needed. Ultram can be taken with or without food, although many patients feel it is digested better with a meal. Ultram should be taken exactly as it is prescribed, and if you are unsure of your prescription, ask your doctor or your pharmacist. Since Ultram can be habit-forming, it is important to only take it as directed. Do not consume a bigger dose or take them more often than prescribed.
Warnings and Precautions
Before you take Ultram, make your doctor aware of any diseases you have, such as kidney or liver disease, or if you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse. If you have these conditions, Ultram may not be right for you, or you may require special monitoring while you take it. Ultram has been listed in the FDA category C. This category means that it may or may not be harmful to a growing fetus. If you are pregnant, never take Ultram before discussing it with your primary care physician. If you are nursing your child, do not take Ultram before talking to your pediatrician, as Ultram may or may not be passed into breast milk. Those over the age of 75 may have more side effects from this medication. The dosage for this age group is no more than 300 mg per day. Ultram has not been FDA approved for persons under the age of 16.
