Aldara Uses

Aldara is a topical cream that is used for treating external perianal and genital warts. Unlike most other treatments, Aldara is patient applied to help the body fight the wart-causing virus internally instead of simply treating the external warts. Therefore, Aldara Cream is a treatment that works from the inside out. Aldara may also be prescribed to treat other skin disorders.

How Aldara Is Used

Aldara is applied directly to warts before bedtime and kept on during sleep. It is then washed off in the morning after awakening. Aldara Cream should be used exactly as the physician has prescribed it. Aldara Cream is for external skin use only. Do not use Aldara Cream near the lips, nostrils or eyes. Do not take Aldara by mouth. Do not use unless your physician has shown you the correct way to use it. Speak to your physician if you have questions regarding Aldara. Use only on the affected areas of the body. Your physician will instruct you in how to apply Aldara, where to apply it and how frequently to apply it. Do not use for longer than prescribed. Using it too frequently or for longer periods than what has been prescribed can result in heightened risk of side effects or a severe skin reaction. Speak with your physician if Aldara is not effective. When Aldara is prescribed for treating external perianal and genital warts it usually is applied once daily, three times a week and left on the affected area for six to ten hours.

Treatment is continued until warts have disappeared or up to 16 weeks. If Aldara is prescribed for treating actinic keratosis, it is usually used daily, twice a week and left on the area for about 8 hours. The treatment should be used for 16 weeks even when the condition has disappeared unless instructed otherwise by the physician.

Warning and Precautions

When using Aldara Cream, if flu-like symptoms develop or if the skin becomes severely irritated, speak with your physician. These symptoms may indicate the need to reduce the frequency of application or to stop the use of Aldara for a short amount of time until symptoms subside. While using Aldara, avoid oral, genital and anal sex while the cream is on the skin and be sure to completely wash it off before having sexual activity. This medication contains oil that can possibly weaken cervical caps, diaphragms and latex condoms, making them ineffective at preventing pregnancy. Avoid using other skin products on the treated areas unless instructed by a physician. If pregnant, speak with your physician.

If Dosage Is Missed

If a dosage is missed, apply the prescribed dosage as soon as remembered and then return to the regular scheduled dosage.

Possible Side Effects

A common side effect of Aldara Cream is a skin reaction, which can include skin peeling, itching, swelling, redness, scabbing, blister, sore or ulcer, thickening or hardening of the skin, burning, itching or discoloration of the skin that may not go away.

Storing Aldara

Aldara should be stored at temperatures below 77 degrees Fahrenheit or 25 degrees Celsius. Do not freeze. Safely discard Aldara when expired or if no longer needed. Keep in a tightly closed container and away from children.

Overdose

Frequent topical overuse of Aldara could increase the risk of a severe skin reaction and could increase the risk of a systemic reaction.
