Famvir is the trade name of the generic drug famciclovir, an antiviral medication used in the treatment of genital herpes as well as shingles and chickenpox. Although not a cure for herpes, the drug stops the spreading of this affliction when used in proper dosage.
How It Works
Famvir is known as a nucleoside analog, a class of drugs that mimics a part of the DNA building blocks. It is often described as a prodrug because instead of actively working against a viral infection, it is converted in the body to penciclovir, which then becomes the active agent against the herpes virus. The drug becomes part of the viral DNA and prevents the virus itself from replicating. Famvir has a fairly long duration of activity and therefore it is favored by physicians and patients, since it does not need to be taken as often as other antiviral medications used to slow or stop the spreading of herpes. Famvir relieves itching, tingling and soreness associated with a herpes outbreak, and accelerates the healing of cold sores that often accompany this infection.
Recommended Dosages
Famvir is available in 125mg, 250mg and 500mg doses. It is taken orally with or without food and is usually prescribed to be taken once or twice per day. As a treatment for recurrent herpes, up to 1000mg are often taken twice, for one day only, while 250mg twice daily is the usual dosage for the suppression of genital herpes. In the latter case, Famvir is often taken for up to one year or longer. Doctors often prescribe Famvir as an episodic treatment, in which 125mg twice a day is considered the normal dosage, taken for five days or longer in the majority of patients.
Patient who are HIV positive are also prescribed Famvir for the suppression and treatment of herpes. Those with HIV are usually prescribed a 500mg dose of this drug for five to seven days.
Taking two doses to make up for a missed dose is not recommended. If a dose is missed a doctor will generally advise the patient to take the next dose on schedule and start the regimen again from that point.
General Warnings
Famvir interacts directly with several other prescription medications, particularly Probenecid. Taking these medications together may have a negative affect on the individual because Probenecid decreases the kidney's ability to flush famciclovir from the bloodstream, resulting in higher than normal concentrations of the drug. Some patients may be allergic to Famvir. Those with kidney disease should not take Famvir unless deemed safe by a doctor.
Side Effects
These are rare and generally quite mild. Possible side effects include nausea, headache, diarrhea, headaches, skin rash and increased flatulence. In a few patients lowered white blood cell or platelet count has been documented. If individuals have an allergic reaction to Famvir the symptoms will most often include swelling of the lips, closing of the throat and difficulty breathing and swallowing. If these reactions occur it is imperative the attending physician be notified immediately.
General information
Famvir can be taken as soon as it is prescribed, whether for suppression or prevention. It is highly recommended that the entire prescription amount be taken by the patient, the period being anywhere from five days to one year or more depending on the purpose of the treatment. Famvir should be stored at room temperature (between 60° and 86° Fahrenheit) and should be kept out of reach of children. Nursing or pregnant women should only take Famvir under the advice of a physician. Doctors will prescribe Famvir to women who are pregnant only if the benefits are considered to outweigh the possibility of harm to the fetus.
Those seeking further information about Famvir are advised to consult with their physician. Famvir is available through prescription only and should only be used under the supervision of a doctor.
