Drug Uses
Valtrex is used for treating zoster, commonly known as shingles. It is also used to suppress the genital herpes virus and for the treatment of cold sores. It is safe for people with HIV to use as well as anyone with compromised immune systems.
How to Take
Valtrex is available as a tablet that should be taken three times a day for 7 days when treating shingles. When used to treat herpes, it should be taken twice a day for 5 days. It should be taken for one day to treat oral cold sores. It should be taken only in the exact dosages and frequency prescribed by a doctor. Treatment with Valtrex should begin as soon as symptoms appear and should continue for full period even if symptoms should disappear altogether.
Warnings and Precautions
Valtrex should not be taken if you are allergic to acyclovir (Zovirax) or if you have kidney problems or immune system problems. Under these circumstances, it is possible to receive a lower dose of Valtrex or additional monitoring. Listed as a FDA pregnancy category B, it is not expected to harm an unborn child. Passage into breast milk and affect on nursing baby is unknown. If you are pregnant of breast-feeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medication.
Missed Dose
Valtrex should be taken as soon as possible after missing a dose. However, if you are within a few hours of the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped and the next dose taken as normal. Never take a double dose of Valtrex.
Possible Side Effects
Kidney failure can occur and some people have experienced problems with their nervous systems. These are rare but can be serious. Nervous system problems include aggressive behavior, unsteady or shaky movements, confusion, problems speaking, oral or auditory hallucinations, coma and seizure. Elderly patients with kidney problems are more likely to have kidney or nervous system problems. It is important to talk to your healthcare provider if you experience any problems with the nervous system while taking Valtrex. Other side effects that are more common include headache, stomach pain and nausea, dizziness and vomiting. Possible side effects in patients with HIV also include tiredness and rash. These are usually mild and you can continue taking Valtrex. Other potential side effects are increased pain during periods for women, depression, joint pain, low blood cell counts and changed in liver and kidney function.
Storage
Store Valtrex in a tightly closed container at 15o to 25o C, or 59o to 77o F. Outdated medication should be disposed of and all medications should be kept out of reach of children.
Overdose
The symptoms of Valtrex overdose are not known, but an overdose of a similar drug, acyclovir, includes seizures, kidney damage and hallucinations. Seek medical help immediately if you suspect an overdose.
