Treating Herpes with Zovirax
Zovirax is a medication that is most often prescribed to treat the pain associated with genital and oral herpes, chicken pox and shingles. While this topical medication will not cure the herpes infection, it will help to manage the external resulting symptoms when used at the first sign of flare-up.
How is Zovirax Taken?
While there is an oral form of this medication, it is only used in severe cases of herpes outbreak. Zovirax is a topical medication that is intended for external use only. For maximum effectiveness, this medication should be used at the first sign of any flare-ups. Be sure to wash hands before and after you have applied this medication to the affected area(s). In order to avoid spreading this virus to any other parts of body, it is recommended that protective gloves be used during application. This topical medication is usually recommended for use every three to four hours, up to six times a day, for a period of seven days. Follow your doctor's instructions for application should they differ. Do not discontinue use mid-therapy even though lesions appear to be healing. Stopping the use of this medication before you have finished its full course puts you at risk of recurrence.
