Aphthasol is the first FDA approved drug on the market for the treatment of apthous ulcers, commonly called canker sores. The mode of action works to reduce inflammation and hasten healing. During clinical trials, it was demonstrated to speed healing time by 72% and relieve pain 90% faster than without treatment. It is available by prescription only. 

Dosage and Instructions

1” of paste should be applied with the fingertips directly to the canker sore four times daily. The ideal times are at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bedtime. The medication will work best if application is performed after cleaning the mouth. Sores can be dried gently with a cloth prior to administration.In the event of a missed dose, patients should wait until the next dose is due and continue with treatment. The missed dose can be made up if there is sufficient time before the next one is due without harm.

Warnings and Precautions

Aphthasol is supplied as a 5% topical preparation in a 5-gram tube. Some patients have reported a burning or stinking sensation following application. Treatment should continue until the sore is healed.Since safety and efficacy has not been studied in patients under the age of 18, it is not recommended for pediatric use. Patients over the age of 54 should use Apthasol with caution. Generally, it is advisable to use lower dosages if any impairment in renal or cardiac function exists.Aphthasol is intended for people with normal immune systems. Immuno-surpressed patients should follow their doctor’s advice regarding treatment.Lactating mothers should use this medication cautiously. During animal studies, the drug was found to be present in the breast milk of laboratory rats.After applying Aphthasol it is important to wash hands thoroughly. If the product should get into the eyes, they should be flushed or rinsed immediately.Any patient that has sensitivity to the active ingredient, Amiexanox, should not use this drug. Patients should also be aware of possible allergies to the inactive ingredients. A physician or dentist should address symptoms that persist longer than 10 days.As with all prescriptions medications, this drug should be kept out of the reach of children.

Side Effects and Drug Interactions

The numbers of patients who report side effects are relatively low. The most common symptoms are a burning or stinging sensation upon application and swelling of the mucus membranes. Nausea and diarrhea were reported in low numbers following ingestion of the paste.Over-dosage with this compound is unlikely. Studies in animals show that ingestion of an entire tube results in non-toxic systemic absorption. In the event of such an occurrence, gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea and vomiting are likely. If over-dosage is suspected, a patient should seek emergency medical attention.There are no notable drug interactions listed.

Storage

Aphthasol should be stored at normal room temperatures. Ideal temperatures are between 59 degrees and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The tube should be kept at out of direct sunlight.
