Drug Use
Atarax, generic name hydroxyzine, is used to relieve itching from allergies and to reduce vomiting and nausea from any cause, but particularly from motion sickness. It is also prescribed to aid in alcohol withdrawal and for the treatment of anxiety.
Dosage
Patients will see relieve in one half to one hour after taking Altarax. It continues to work up to six hours. To treat itching, vomiting and nausea, it is prescribed at a 25 mg dose three or four times daily. For sedation, the dose is 50 mg to 100 mg. Anxiety is treated with 50 mg to 100 mg four times per day.
Altarax can be taken by both children and adults. Children under the age of six taking this medication for allergies should take a maximum of 50 mg per day in multiple doses. For children over six years old taking this medication for allergies, the maximum dose per day is 50 mg to 100 mg per day. For adults taking this medication for allergies, the maximum daily dose is 50 mg to 100 mg per day.
Dosage for anxiety and sedation will be higher and directed by your physician.
Warnings/Precautions
Pregnant women should take this medication with caution. Discuss with your doctor the possible health benefits and any harmful effects that might be possible. It is unknown if this medication is excreted in breast milk. Talk to your pediatrician or other doctor before taking this medication if you are breastfeeding.
Missed Dose
Take a missed dose as soon as you remember. If you take a missed dose close to your next scheduled dose, skip the next dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication. You may resume your normal medication schedule on the next dose.
Possible Side Effects
Atarax can cause side effects, but they should not be severe. Call your doctor if side effects are severe. Possible side effects can include:
- upset stomach
- drowsiness
- dry mouth
- chest congestion
- headache
- dizziness
- reddening of skin
Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

Storage
Medication should be stored in a dry place. Keep away from dampness and light. Store medication away from the reach of children.
Overdose
The most common symptom of an overdose is extreme tiredness. If you suspect an overdose, call yourdoctor or 911 immediately.
More Information
Altarax can cause drowsiness. Do not drive a car or operate heavy machinery until you know how this medication will affect you.
