Uses of Elidel
Elidel, a prescription drug, is used as a topical treatment of the condition of atopic dermatitis which is also referred to as eczema. The use of Elidel is restricted to topical skin use only. The medication may be used in children over the age of 2 as well as adults. Elidel may be used in intermittent long-term use or for short periods. The use of the medication will be determined by the prescribing physician. The medication may be used on all areas of affected skin, including the neck and facial area.
Dosage
1% Elidel cream should be applied in a thin single layer to any affected area twice per day. The cream should be thoroughly yet gently rubbed into the area. The medication may be used on all areas of the skin including the neck and face. The cream can be used twice per day for the duration of the symptoms and signs of atopic dermatits. If the disease resolves itself, you should cease using the cream. If the symptoms have not been resolved after 6 weeks of Elidel use, the physician should re-evaluate the condition of the patient. Elidel's safety in regard to systemic exposure requires further investigation. As such, the cream should not be used in an occlusive dressing.
Precautions/Warnings
Make sure that you do not begin using Elidel cream before discussing any conditions with your doctor, particularly congenital skin disorders such as Netherton's syndrome. Prior to using the medication, discuss any conditions such as skin conditions, immune system diseases, etc with your physician. Additionally, mention whether you are using any other skin products such as ointments, lotions, or creams.
Depending upon your use of other products or the presence of other conditions, Elidel may not be prescribed or may require an adjustment of dosage. The physician may also wish to monitor you throughout the course of the treatment to ensure no adverse effects. Elidel is also listed as a category C drug during pregnancy by the FDA. This indicates that it is not known whether or not the cream will affect an unborn baby. If you are planning on becoming pregnant or are already pregnant, discuss with your physician prior to continuing or beginning use. It is also unknown as to whether the medication can be passed into breast milk. Therefore, discuss prior to using medication while breast feeding. Elidel should not be used by children under the age of 2.
In Case of a Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. However, if the time has come for a subsequent dose, do not double the dose that you would normally administer. Instead, take your dose and continue taking at the regular intervals.
Potential Side Effects
The most likely side effect in relation to the administration of Elidel is a feeling of burning or warmth on the affected area. The feeling of burning can range from a mild discomfort to moderate pain and usually occurs within the initial 5 days of use. The sensation will normally dissipate within a couple of days. If the burning becomes severe or continues for over a week, consult with a physician. Other side effects have been known to occur including headache as well as influenza, the common cold, fever, viral infection, cough, and sore throat particularly in patients using the medication long-term. Some patients have also been known to experience herpes infections of the skin such as shingles, chicken pox, and cold sores, as well as swollen lymph nodes or glands and warts.
In Case of an Overdose
No overdose experiences have been recorded in regard to 1% Elidel cream. However, in the case of oral ingestion, you should seek out medical advice.
Storage of Elidel
Do not freeze cream. Store at a temperature of 25°C (77°F) with the cream never becoming colder than 15°C (59°F ) and never warmer than 30°C (86°F).
Additional Information
Avoid excessive heat and sun exposure while taking the medication. If going outdoors, wear loose clothing to protect skin from direct sunlight. Discuss any additional protection methods with your physician. Other topical skin products should also be avoided unless otherwise indicated by doctor.
