Drug Uses

Lamisil is designed to treat onychomycosis of the toenail or fingernail that occurs as a result of dermatophytes.

How Taken

It is a tablet that is taken orally, typically once a day for 6 weeks to treat fingernail fungus or once a day for 12 weeks to treat toenail fungus. It should be taken as directed and doses or frequency of doses should not be altered. It is possible that it will take a few months after you stop taking Lamisil for the fungal infection to be completely cured as the fungus is not considered completely cured until a new nail has grow in fully. Lamisil should be taken exactly as prescribed by a health care professional, doses should not be altered and it should be taken around the same time each day when possible.

Warnings/ Precautions

Lamisil should not be taken without talking to a doctor. It should not be taken if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients, have liver or kidney disease, immune system problems or problems with your blood. If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to take Lamisil or you may need to take it in an altered dose or with special monitoring. Alcohol should be avoided or consumed only in moderation while taking this medication. Lamisil is a pregnancy category B medication according to the FDA. It is not found to be harmful to babies but it should not be taken by pregnant women without first consulting a doctor. It will pass into breast milk and so women who are breast-feeding should consult their doctor before taking it.

Missed Dose

Missed doses should be taken when remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose, in which case it can be skipped. Double doses should not be taken at any time for any reason.

Possible Side Effects

Some side effects are possible and if they occur the medication should be discontinued and a doctor consulted. These include an allergic reaction such as trouble breathing, throat closing, swelling of lips, tongue or face and have. Other potentially serious side effects include a rash, blood problems as measured through blood test of changes in vision. Liver damage has been caused by Lamisil, including the need for liver transplant and even severe cases that resulted in death. If you develop vomiting, nausea, unusual fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, itching, clay colored stools, dark urine or a yellowing of the skin or eyes you should consult a doctor immediately as these can be early symptoms of liver damage. There are less serious side effects that can also occur. If you experience nausea, heartburn, upset stomach, diarrhea, flatulence, taste disturbance, loss of taste or headache you should consult your doctor but continue to take the medication. Any side effect that is upsetting or unusual should be discussed with your doctor.

Storage

Tablets should be stored below 25oC or 77o F, away from light in an airtight container.
OverdoseOverdose symptoms from Lamisil are not severe. They typically include vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, rash, dizziness, headache and frequent urination. It is important to seek medical attention if you suspect overdose from Lamisil.
