Uses of Retin-A

The primary use of Retin-A is to enhance the look and feel of a person's skin. Retin-A improves skin through a mild peeling of the skin's outer layer. In addition to the outer layer of the skin, Retin-A also penetrates to the dermis, or the deepest layer of skin. The overall goal of a Retin-A regimen is to decrease the signs of aging that are caused by direct sun exposure by allowing new skin cells to come to the surface.

How to Use Retin-A

A light layer should be applied to the skin before bed. If applying a liquid form of Retin-A, application may be easier if you use a cotton swab or gauze pad. To decrease signs of irritation, your hands should be washed after applying Retin-A to the skin. Only apply the amount that has been recommended by your doctor, as using more than advised can result in an increased risk of side effects. To avoid skin irritation, do not apply Retin-A near the mouth, eyes or any open wounds. It is common for acne to increase while using Retin-A and the product should continue to be used even if acne occurs. Results will not be seen right away after using Retin-A, as it generally takes three to six weeks before a noticeable improvement in the skin is visible. A gentle cleanser should be used to wash the face and you should not wash your face several times throughout the day. Certain cleansers, creams, face scrubs and lotions can increase irritation of the skin and you should discuss your options with your doctor. Be careful when using other acne treatments in conjunction with Retin-A.

Warnings

Use of Retin-A can make your skin extremely sensitive to wind, cold and direct sunlight. Excessive sun exposure or use of tanning beds should be avoided while using Retin-A and sunscreen should be applied before sun exposure. If you are pregnant, only use Retin-A if it is needed. Since it is unknown whether Retin-A can be ingested by a baby through breast milk, consult with your doctor if you are breast feeding.

Missed Dose

If you miss an application of Retin-A, only apply it if it does not occur too closely with your next scheduled application. Do not apply a double dose of Retin-A to make up for a missed application.

Possible Side Effects

Before applying to your full face, test a small patch of skin first to check for signs of irritation. Since sun exposure can significantly increase irritation, avoid direct sun exposure if possible and always wear sunscreen if in sunlight. It is normal for your skin to suddenly break out while first using Retin-A, since blemishes within the layers of the skin are being brought to the surface and eliminated. If an ingredient in Retin-A causes an allergic reaction, do not continue treatment.

Storage Information

Store Retin-A away in a location that children cannot access. Retin-A should be stored around room temperature and kept away from sun exposure.

Overdose

Applying Retin-A more than once a day will not improve the look of your skin at a faster rate and will increase the possibility of developing skin redness, discomfort and peeling of the skin. The over-application of other retinoid products can result in unpleasant side effects such as stomach pain, dizziness, transient headache and lack of muscle coordination.

Additional Information

If you have used exfoliants or keratolytic preparations in the past, you should postpone Retin-A treatment until the signs of rash have dissipated. Since the effects of Retin-A on women who are currently pregnant are relatively unknown, a doctor should closely monitor your health and this medication should only be used if found to be absolutely necessary. It is normal for skin irritation to occur. While acne may worsen at the beginning of using Retin-A, it will improve over time and with consistent applications. While makeup can be applied to the skin, only apply Retin-A on skin that is clean.
