Usage of Zyban

Zyban is used to aid in smoking cessation in patients who have an addiction to nicotine. It is not a nicotine replacement therapy and contains no nicotine.

How Zyban is Taken

Zyban is used in tablet form and is ingested orally. Most doctors prescribe Zyban to be taken twice a day, and it is to be swallowed whole, however your physician may prescribe a different dosage. Do not chew or crush Zyban tablets for ingestion. Zyban should be swallowed whole and can be taken on an empty stomach, or with a meal.

Warnings for Zyban

Zyban should not be used in patients who use a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI,) or in patients that have used an MAOI in the last 14 days. If you are pregnant, please consult with your physician before beginning Zyban. While Zyban is scheduled as a Class B drug by the FDA, meaning it should not harm an unborn child, your doctor will be able to give you more information that is specific to your case. At this time, studies are not conclusive as to harmful effects of Zyban on nursing babies, so it is important to discuss this with your doctor if you are breast feeding, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant.

If You Miss a Dose

If you miss a scheduled dose of Zyban, wait until your next scheduled dose and take it. Do not take extra tablets in order to cover a missed dose. As well, do not take Zyban more than prescribed by your physician. Taking more Zyban than has been prescribed could lead to a seizure.

Side Effects

As with all medications, Zyban carries the risk of side effects. As a result, please consult with your doctor if you have further questions. This list is in no way meant to be comprehensive. Some patients have reported experiencing hypertension, or high blood pressure, when taking Zyban. This has been reported in patients taking only Zyban, as well as patients who use Zyban in conjunction with a nicotine replacement therapy, such as nicotine gum. Dry mouth and sleep difficulty have also been commonly reported in patients using Zyban. If you experience sleep difficulty, consult with your physician about changing your dosing schedule. These side effects are typically mild and will go away within a few weeks of starting Zyban. Some patients developed rash and/or shakiness in clinical trials. If you find these side effects bothersome, or you develop severe rash, hives, or have difficulty in breathing, consult with your physician right away. This is also the case if you have swollen lymph nodes, swelling of the tongue, lips, or throat, or sores in the mouth, as these could lead to more severe consequences. Again, please consult with your physician regarding any and all side effects.

How to Store Zyban

Zyban should be stored in a sealed container away from direct sunlight. Store at room temperature and out of the reach of children.

In Case of Overdose of Zyban

If you suspect that there has been an overdose of Zyban, seek medical assistance immediately. Some symptoms of Zyban overdose include hallucinations, loss of consciousness, seizures, rapid heart rate, and heart attack. If these side effects present themselves, call 911 or seek medical treatment right away.

More Information on Zyban

It is recommended to limit or cease alcohol use while on Zyban. If you consume alcohol on a regular basis, please consult with your physician before stopping, as this may lead to consequences such as seizures. Please use caution when operating machinery, including motor vehicles, while taking Zyban. As Zyban may cause drowsiness and dizziness, it is important to know how your body responds to it before driving on Zyban.
