Applications
Diflucan may be prescribed in cases of cryptococcal meningitis or in Candida infections of the vagina, the esophagus or the tonsils and the area surrounding them. Persons who have had chemotherapy or radiation therapy during bone marrow transplants may also be prescribed Diflucan to guard against Candida infection.
Method of Administration
Diflucan is taken orally as either a pill or a liquid. It is typically prescribed in a single daily dose. Patients should read the information on the packaging carefully, and should not hesitate to question their medical provider or pharmacist about anything they don't understand. Follow the directions exactly. Do not change the amount or frequency of the dosage unless directed to do so by your medical provider. If using Diflucan in liquid form, be sure to shake well for adequate mixing. Keep taking this medication as directed even if the symptoms go away. Do not stop taking this medication except on the instructions of your physician.
Warning
This medication should not be taken by patients using cisapride, which is sold under the brand name Propulsid. Mixing these medicines can cause severe heart damage that may be fatal. When considering taking Diflucan, be sure to inform your doctor of any other medicines you are taking or medical conditions you may have, particularly those involving the kidneys. Such illnesses may mean that you are disqualified from taking Diflucan, that a reduced dosage is required or that special monitoring is needed during the treatment. The FDA has placed Diflucan in their pregnancy Category C, which means that the effects on an unborn baby are unknown. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant in the treatment period should consult with their doctor before taking Diflucan. Mothers who are breast-feeding should not take Diflucan since it can pass into breast milk and may be detrimental to a nursing child.
Skipped Dose
If you miss a dose, do not take two doses to make up for it. Instead, take your regular dose immediately when you remember it. If it is close to the time for the next dose, do not take the missed dose and resume the dosage schedule as directed.
Side Effects
If any of these harmful side effects occurs, stop the dosage and find emergency medical aid or consult with your medical provider without delay: labored breathing, difficulty swallowing, hives, rash, swelling of the face or tongue, light-colored stool, yellow tint to skin or eyes, pain in the abdomen, unexplained fatigue, or darkening of the urine. However, the more common side effects are generally less severe. If any of these symptoms occurs, consult with your medical provider but do not discontinue the dosage: abdominal discomfort including vomiting, diarrhea, unexplained fatigue, dizzy spells, headache, or itching. There may also be other side effects, so talk to your physician about any symptoms that bother you or seem unusual.
Storage
Tablets should not be stored above 86 F (30 C). Do not freeze. Viaflex Plus plastic containers of injectable Diflucan come in either dextrose or sodium chloride form and should not be stored above 77 F (25 C) or below 41 F (5C). May be briefly exposed to temperatures up to 104 F without harmful effects. Do not freeze.
Overdose
In the event of an overdose, get emergency medical care immediately. Overdose of this medication can cause decreased movement and breathing, confusion, hallucinations, paranoia, urinary incontinence, drooling, tearing of the eyes, seizures and death.
Additional Precautions
Both alcohol and Diflucan can affect the liver, so patients taking Diflucan should avoid or limit their consumption of alcohol. Diflucan can induce dizziness, and patients who experience this should avoid driving or other potentially dangerous tasks.
