Evista is a medication that is available by prescription only. It is used by post-menopausal women to prevent or treat osteoporosis. If you take Evista you should also take vitamin D and calcium supplements, unless you already obtain adequate amounts of these nutrients from your diet.
How to Take Evista
One 60-mg Evista tablet each day is the recommended dosage. It can be taken with or without meals at any time of the day.
Precautions and Warnings
It is important to tell your physician if you have a history of liver disease, high cholesterol, cancer, stroke or increased triglycerides before taking Evista. If you have any of these conditions, you may require an adjusted dose of Evista, special monitoring, or you may not be able to take the drug at all. Evista is classified as pregnancy category X by the United States Food and Drug Administration, meaning that Evista can cause birth abnormalities in babies. Therefore, you should refrain from the use of Evista if you are pregnant or might become pregnant while taking the drug. Whether or not Evista passes into a woman's breast milk has not yet been determined. Therefore, Evista should be avoided if you are breast-feeding a newborn.
Missed Dose
If you are taking Evista and accidentally miss a dose, you should take the dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is already time for the next dose, do not take a double dose, but simply skip the missed dose and take the regularly scheduled dose.
Potential Side Effects
An uncommon but serious side effect of Evista treatment is the development of venous blood clots, which can cease the normal flow of blood in a person's veins and cause serious health problems, temporary or permanent disability, or death. Contact your physician immediately if you have experienced any of the following symptoms: a warm sensation in the calves, pain, swelling of the feet, hands or legs, pain in the chest, vision changes, shortness of breath or coughing up blood. The majority of Evista side effects are mild and generally do not result in a women having to stop taking Evista. Frequent side effects of Evista include leg cramps and hot flashes, with the latter being more common during the first six months of treatment. How to Store Evista
Evista should be stored at a consistent room temperature of 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit
Overdose
There is no designated antidote for an overdose of Evista; however, there have been no reported incidents of Evista overdose in humans.

Before having any surgery, it is important that your family physician be aware of the fact that you are taking Evista. Evista treatment might need to be temporarily stopped if an extended period of bed rest is required. It is important to avoid prolonged sitting while taking Evista.
