Drug Uses

Fosamax is prescribed for postmenopausal women to prevent and treat osteoporosis. Fosamax prevents and treats osteoporosis by increasing bone mass and reducing the incidence of hip and spine fractures and other bone fractures. Fosamax may also be prescribed for men with osteoporosis. Both men and women at risk for induced osteoporosis due to taking daily dosages of glucocorticoids equivalent to 7.5 mg. or more of prednisone may, be prescribed Fosamax if they have low bone mineral density and for treatment of Paget’s disease.

How to take Fosamax

Fosamax is taken by mouth in tablet form. It is taken once each day, morning and evening. The drug is taken on an empty stomach with a full glass (six to eight ounces) of plain water. Do not take Fosamax with coffee, orange juice, mineral water; milk or other dairy products. Swallow Fosamax whole. Do not chew, or suck on the tablet. After taking Fosamax, wait at least 30 minutes before you lie down. To get the full dose, stand or sit upright. This also reduces heartburn and the risk of esophageal injury. 

Warnings and Precautions

You should tell your doctor if you have problems swallowing before taking Fosamax. This includes narrowing of the esophagus, esophageal ulcers or esophageal disease. If you have disease related low calcium levels, kidney disease, stomach ulcers or other digestive problems, or are unable to stand or sit upright for at least thirty minutes. It is not known whether Fosamax can harm an unborn baby. Since Fosamax is in FDA category C, talk with your doctor if you are pregnancy, or may become pregnant during treatment; or if you are breastfeeding a baby.

Missed Dose

If Fosamax is prescribed for you to take each day and you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose the following day. Do not take two doses at the same time, as missing one dose will not affect your treatment regimen. When taking Fosamax once a week, if you miss a dose, take it on the morning after you remember. Never take two tablets on the same day. Begin taking one table once per week, as originally recommended on originally scheduled day. 

Possible Side Effects

If you experience serious side effects such as an allergic reaction (closing of the throat; difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue; or hives), seek emergency attention. Tell your doctor if you have the following: difficulty or pain when swallowing, chest pain, heart burn that is new or becomes worse, or burning under the ribs or back. If you experience headache abdominal discomfort; upset stomach, constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation; change in sense of taste; muscle, bone, or joint soreness or aches; eye pain or rash, continue taking Fosamax, but talk to your doctor. There may be other side effects, so if you experience any conditions that could be side effects, let your doctor know.

Storage

Store Fosamax in a secure closed container at room temperature, 15-30°C (59-86°F). 

Overdose

An oral overdose may result in the following conditions: hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and upper gastrointestinal adverse events, such as upset stomach, heartburn, esophagitis, gastritis, or ulcer, may result from oral over dosage. If you suspect an overdose has happened, call an emergency room or poison control center. 

More Information

Always follow your doctor's recommendations concerning drinking alcohol and smoking while taking Fosamax. Smoking and drinking are related to decreased bone density. Taking antacids and other medications taken by mouth may decrease the effects of Fosamax. Wait 30 minutes after your dose of Fosamax before taking any other medicines. Speak to your doctor before taking any other medications during treatment with Fosamax.
