Microzide is a brand name of the pharmaceutical medication hydrochorothiazide. This drug is used in the treatment of hypertension. In a class of drugs known as diuretics, Microzide inhibits the kidneys' water retaining ability. It is also used in the treatment of symptomatic edema, renal tubular acidosis and to help prevent the formation of kidney stones.

How Microzide Works

One of the major problems associated with hypertension is an elevated amount of sodium in the blood. Microzide acts to inhibit the reabsorption of salt into the bloodstream. This action occurs in the kidneys, and the operation of the drug results in an increased water discharge from the body as a part of kidney function.

Dosage

Microzide is available by prescription and comes in capsules or tablets. It is taken orally, at least once per day, generally in the morning with liquids or food. The drug is most commonly prescribed in 12.5 mg does, which is the usual strength of the tablets or capsules. If a dose is skipped accidentally, it is not recommended that the next dose be of a larger amount.

Before Taking Microzide

Patients should tell their doctor if they are taking any other pharmaceutical medications, have liver problems, diabetes, allergies, urinary problems or have experienced symptoms of gout. Microzide is one of several types of thiazides and their functions are somewhat different depending on the actual chemical composition. Microzide is intended for certain patients only because of the sensitivity many have to one or more types of thiazide medications.

Side Effects And Health Warnings

Side effects are generally mild and can include hyperuricemia, high blood sugar, headache, nausea and vomiting, photosensitivity and moderate weight gain. Microzide can increase the chances of allergic reactions in some individuals, especially those with a history of sulfa drug allergies.

Other Information

Microzide is sometimes prescribed for patients with diabetes insipidus, Dent's disease and osteoporosis. Hydrochlorothiazide actually reduces bone mineral loss due to the action the drug performs in the kidneys, but this treatment is not recommended for everyone suffering from osteoporosis.

Storage Of Microzide

This product should be kept in the package in which it was dispensed, kept out of reach of children and stored at room temperature, away from moisture and bright lights, which can alter the chemical composition of the drug.

Although an effective treatment for hypertension in many individuals, persons wanting to know more about Microzide should consult with their physician before taking any pharmaceutical product. This information is intended as a guide only and should not be taken as medical fact or legal advice.
