All About Naprosyn

Naprosyn is usually prescribed in order to treat different types of arthritis including rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and juvenile arthritis. It can alo be used to treat tendonitis, bursitis and gout. The drug is used to help relief pain that occurs with these conditions.

Naprosyn comes in the form of a tablet or as a liquid. The liquid is usually prescribed for children with arthritis in order to base the dosage upon weight which can change as children grow. Adults can take the tablet which comes in a regular version and well as an extended-release version. Adults who use the extended release tablets only need to take the medicine one time a day. Otherwise, medication is usually taken every 6 to 8 hours or as needed for pain management. Because this medicine can irritate your stomach, it is recommended that you take your medicine with food or milk.

Before you begin to take Naprosyn, you should discuss the medicine with your doctor. During that discussion, mention to your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to aspirin or other types of drugs called NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. You should also tell your doctor if you have ever had bleeding in your stomach or if you have had an ulcer. If you drink 3 or more alcoholic beverages per day, you also need to tell that to your doctor as alcohol can cause problems with this medication. Be sure to mention if you have liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, congestive heart failure, or high blood pressure. This may mean that your doctor might not be able to prescribe this drug for you, or it may mean that he or she will need to adjust your dosage. In some cases, you may be able to take the drug, but your doctor may need to monitor you more closely.

Naprosyn can be taken during a pregnancy as it is classified as a category B drug. This means that it probably will not cause any harm to an unborn child. Although it is safe to take during pregnancy, it should not be taken during the last trimester because it could cause problems with the baby's heart. Naprosyn is excreted into breast milk and can affect your baby if you are nursing. For this reason, you should be sure to tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding.

If you are taking the regular tablets or the liquid Naprosyn and miss a dose, you should take your dose as soon as you remember that you have missed it. If it is time to take the next dose, you should skip the missed dose. Never double up on doses of your medication.

If you experience any of the following side effects, you should get prompt medical attention. These side effects include an allergic reaction, muscle cramps or ulcers in your mouth. If you have fluid retention or notice a sudden weight gain, you should also contact your doctor promptly. Contact your doctor if you notice blood in your vomit or in your stools. You should also contact your doctor if you experience heartburn, dry mouth, headaches, nausea, vomiting, depression, diarrhea or constipation. You may also notice changes in your menstrual periods. These changes should also be reported to your doctor.

Keep this medication in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. If you have reason to suspect that you have overdosed on your medication whether by accident or otherwise, you should seek medical attention.

Since Naprosyn may increase your sensitivity to light, you should wear sunscreen and cover up when you are going out in the sun. You should also be careful when taking this medication and using over-the-counter medications which contain aspirin. Before taking over the counter medications, you should talk to your pharmacist or doctor to see if it is safe.
